Five ways to layer necklaces (without it looking try-hard)

A boutique stylist's rules for stacking chains that actually work.

Layering is the easiest way to make three simple pieces look like one considered outfit — and the easiest way to end up looking like you got dressed in the dark. A few rules we give customers at the Westlands boutique:

1. Vary the length, not just the chain

Two necklaces at nearly the same length compete with each other. Aim for at least 5cm of difference between each layer so every chain gets its own moment instead of stacking into one blurry line.

2. Let one piece lead

Pick the piece with the most detail — a pendant, a drop, a cluster of stones — and build the rest around it in plainer chains. Three statement pieces together read as chaos, not confidence.

3. Mix metals on purpose, not by accident

Gold and silver together work when it looks deliberate — the same tone repeated somewhere else in the outfit, in a ring or an earring — rather than one stray piece that doesn’t match anything.

4. Necklines set the rules

A crew neck wants shorter layers sitting above the collarbone. A deep V or an open shirt has room for one longer piece to drop further down — that’s where a pendant earns its keep.

5. Take one off before you leave the house

Whatever you’re wearing, remove one piece before you walk out the door. It’s the oldest styling trick there is, and it’s still the one people forget.
